The Company Suffix: Limited or Ltd?

There is no legal difference between "Limited" and "Ltd." They mean exactly the same thing and carry identical legal weight. The choice between them is purely a matter of preference.

Why Does a Company Need A Suffix?

Every private limited company registered in the UK has to include "Limited" or "Ltd" at the end of its name. It's a legal requirement under the Companies Act 2006, not something you can opt out of.

The suffix is there to tell anyone dealing with the company that it's a registered limited entity. That matters because limited liability is one of the main reasons people incorporate in the first place. Dropping the suffix would mean people couldn't tell from the name alone what kind of business they're dealing with.

Which One Should I Use?

Whichever looks better to you. Genuinely, that's the whole decision.

Some people go with "Limited" because it feels more substantial, particularly for professional services firms or any context where a formal appearance matters. Others go with "Ltd" because it's shorter and easier to fit on a business card, email signature, or the end of an invoice.

What If I Want to Change It Later?

You can, but it's treated as a company name change and needs to be filed with Companies House. It's not complicated, but it does mean updating anything that has the company name on it, contracts, stationery, your website, and so on.

Welsh Companies: An Additional Option

If your company is registered in Wales, there's a third option. Welsh companies can use "Cyfyngedig" or "Cyf" instead of "Limited" or "Ltd." This is only available to companies with a registered office in Wales whose name appears in Welsh on the register.
